Ever noticed how some trains just seem to breeze through their entire journey without a hitch, while others get stopped and delayed at what feels like every second station? It's not random luck, and it's definitely not bad karma either, even though it might feel that way sometimes when you're the one stuck waiting. Indian Railways actually runs on a fairly clear, well established pecking order when it comes to which trains get priority on the tracks, and once you understand how this order works, a lot of those confusing, frustrating halts along your journey start to make a lot more sense.
The order, roughly from the very top down to the bottom
1. Premium Trains (Top Priority): Right at the very top of this list, you've got what I'd call the premium trains. These are things like the Vande Bharat, Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, Duronto Express, Tejas, and Humsafar. These are essentially the flagship services of Indian Railways, the ones the whole system is somewhat built around showcasing. They're fast, they don't stop very often along their route, and when it comes to getting the right of way on shared tracks, almost every other type of train steps aside to let them through first.
2. Superfast (SF) Express Trains: Just a notch below that, you've got the Superfast trains. You can usually spot these by looking for "SF" somewhere in the train's name, or sometimes just by recognising the train number itself if you're familiar with the numbering pattern (usually starting with 12 or 22). These trains are specifically scheduled to run faster and make fewer stops compared to a regular express train, and as a result, they generally get preference over the more ordinary services running on the same route.
3. Regular Mail & Express Trains: Then comes what I'd honestly call the big middle category, the one where most of us actually spend the bulk of our travel time. This is the regular Mail and Express category. It includes more stops than a superfast train would make, sits at a fairly moderate level of priority, and honestly, this is really the backbone of most long distance train journeys happening across the country on any given day.
4. Passenger, MEMU and DEMU Services: Below that, you've got Passenger, MEMU and DEMU trains. These stop at practically every single station along their route, and they usually cover much shorter distances compared to the long haul trains. Because they're the slowest of the bunch and generally considered the least time sensitive, they're also the ones most likely to get held back at a station so that something faster can pass through first.
5. Freight & Goods Trains: And right down at the very bottom of this entire list, you've got freight trains, also known as goods trains. These generally carry the lowest priority of all types of rail traffic running on the network, though this can shift around a little bit depending on how urgent a particular shipment is and what else is happening across the broader network at that specific moment.
How can you make a rough guess at a train's priority just by looking at it?
There are two fairly easy giveaways you can look out for: - The Name & Prefix: If you spot the word "Superfast," or the letters "SF," or one of those well known premium brand names like Rajdhani, Shatabdi, or Vande Bharat, you already have a pretty good idea of roughly where it sits in this order. - Number of Stoppages: As a rough rule of thumb, the more stations a train halts at during its journey, the lower down this priority order it probably sits. A train that stops at forty or more stations across a long route is very likely a Passenger train or one of the lower tier Express services. Meanwhile, a train that only stops eight or ten times across that same distance is probably running as a Superfast service or something even higher up the chain.
But priority definitely isn't the whole story here
This is honestly where a lot of people, myself included at one point, tend to get it wrong. It's very tempting to assume that every single unexpected stop along your journey must mean something like "oh, a Rajdhani must be overtaking us right now." But that assumption isn't always correct. Sometimes it's actually a lower priority train that's causing the hold up, simply because that particular train has a scheduled stop coming up at the next station and genuinely needs that platform to be free before it can pull in, regardless of what priority level it officially holds. So really, priority mainly comes into play and decides the outcome when two trains are genuinely competing for the exact same stretch of track at the exact same moment in time. It doesn't explain absolutely every single delay you'll ever experience on a journey.
Why any of this is actually useful for you to know as a passenger
Once you have a decent understanding of where a particular train sits within this whole priority order, you end up with a much more realistic, grounded sense of what to actually expect from your upcoming journey. Booking a Superfast train or one of the premium services generally does mean you'll run into fewer random, unexplained holds caused purely by priority related reasons.
